1. Dalt Vila Circular - Intermediate Route

Location
Sant Antoni

Not technically difficult but this is a challenging bike ride, taking in a lot of distance and a fair amount of climbing and descending. You will need to physically fit to manage this.

The departure point is the es Molí roundabout in San Antonio. You will bike past some farmland and then a residential area before entering the woodlands to begin the climb into the sa Murta mountainside. From there, you descend down into the city of Eivissa.

Returning back to San Antonio along the old road to Sant Mateu, you will cross the island on the old dirt roads, going past the San Rafael parish, until you arrive at Sant Antoni. The route ends where it began, next to the municipal soccer field.

2. Ibiza Extrem Circular - Advanced Route

Location
Sant Josep

There is a reason that only one third of people who take on this route actually complete it and a reason that it has been name 'Extrem'.

Not for the faint hearted this route is not only long but gruelling, with long thigh throbbing climbs and technical descents. This route starts and ends in San Jose and takes in several loops around the coastline and inland valleys of the south of the island.

From San Jose the route begins with a gentle stretch towards the first climb to sa Capelleta, a climb where you may even struggle to stay on the bike! After a rapid descent followed by an ascent to the Sierra de sa Murta you will come across a series of technically difficult paths.

The route includes a second ascent of sa Capelleta, this time by its east slope. The descent is through Benimussa in order to climb the other stretch of sa Capelleta, this time by its north side. The descent to cala Jondal along a series of tracks and paths among pines and junipers, is a refreshing change to the backbreaking uphill and brings you to the village of es Cubells where the cliff trails begin. At this point of the route particular attention must be given as the path borders the sea and can be tricky and at times dangerous. With a drop of some 150 metres it will be probably best go on foot...

The climb to Puig d’en Serra is extremely tough as you climb the 415 metres in scarcely 1.5 km (luckily by road this time). From here there is a descent before taking on the climb of the highest peak on the island, sa Talaia, at 475 metres' altitude. The descent from here to San Jose is one of the best in the area: fast, in the woods and with a fair drop in elevation.

3. Cala Sant Vicent Circular - Intermediate Route

Not for the faint hearted, this bike route will take you over Ibiza's second highest mountain, Sa Torreta, which stands at a height of 412m.

A good circular route that allows you to explore the towns, coastline and countryside in the north of the island. This is a physically demanding route that takes you over the second highest peak on the island and through farming land to the coast.

Starting off at the church, you will pass through some typical pine woodland, which explains why Ibiza and Formentera are known as the Pityuses, an ancient Greek name meaning “pine islands”. Ascending and descending you will go through orchards that are filled with almond trees, fig trees, carob trees and olive trees. The trail goes directly into the town of San Carlos, well known for the Las Dalias hippy market that takes place there on a Saturday. From here you will need to tackle a steep but short climb to Puig des Molí from where you then gradually descend towards the coast, arriving at Platja des Figueral (Fig Tree Beach) - a good spot for a quick dip in the sea!

The coastal trail from here snakes along and leads you to Cala de San Vicent. This sandy cove is another ideal spot for cooling down in the water and enjoying a wonderful view of the sea and the small island of Tagomago. On the return journey to San Juan you will find yourself climbing up to the area surrounding the Portinatx lighthouse, the northernmost point of the island.

Benirras Beach, North West Ibiza

4. Na Xamena Circular - Beginner Route

Taking in the beautiful olive and almond groves of the north west and the popular beach if Benirras, this circular is a great way to begin your biking experience in Ibiza.

Although a high percentage of this road is on road, they are very narrow with scarcely any markings. It will take you on a journey through the countryside and landscapes of the north of the island, making it accessible to cyclists who are not so skilled on two wheels.

It is a circular route, leaving from the small village of Sant Llorenç (San Lorenzo) and passing through the countryside, you will pass close to the town of Sant Miquel and climb until es Portixol where you begin a descent via a spectacular path with access to the cliffs of Na Xamena.

5. From Coast to Coast - Advanced Route

Location
Sant Antoni

This route was the final stage of the Ibiza Mountain Bike Tour in 2009. A gruelling route that follows the coastline of the north west of Ibiza.

With some notable climbs, this bike ride will put you to the test - through narrow trails strewn with stones, tracks that meander through various valleys, hidden forest roads and two coves where you can take a dip. All of these bear witness to the arrival of the mountain bike to this island of Ibiza.

From the starting point in San Antonio you will make your way towards the lovely valley of Buscastell, before continue up a gradual climb to the top of Camp Vell at 330m. Bordering Cala d'Albarca cove through a curious narrow path that has stunning views of the scenery, you will then follow a stretch of track that takes you up to the luxurious Hacienda hotel. Passing Puerto de San Miguel and Benirras beaches the route then climbs again to the cove of Caló de s'Illaf: a mysterious spot of crystalline waters. Later in the village of San Juan the last – and hardest – climb commences and then connect later with the track that leads to the highest point on the route: Puig d'en Teixidor, at 352 metres.
