Cala Moli Beach Review

A beach made for snorkelers and explorers

featured in Beach reviews Author Anita Gait, Ibiza Reporter Updated

The area south of San Antonio Bay is simply littered with beaches worth visiting and you’d have to holiday here for longer than a week to spend a full day at each of them. But one little beach that should be on your itinerary, if only for a few hours, is quiet, pebbly little Cala Moli located in between the busier neighbouring beaches of Cala Tarida and Cala Vedella.

Although only 15 minutes drive from San Antonio, Cala Moli feels much further away, set as it is off the public transport routes amidst unpopulated hills. It remains undeveloped with no settlements or hotels overlooking or encroaching on it. This, plus its location between two much larger sandier beaches, means that this beach tends to stay pretty quiet even in peak summer, and it wouldn’t take many people to fill this little beach up. Less than 100m long and 30m wide Moli is unlike most of Ibiza’s other beaches where privacy hunters can spread out around the edges. Here the beach ends in a steep wall of rock at one end and jagged boulders of rock at the other, great for rock climbers, explorers and snorkelers but not for people looking to sunbathe away from the crowd.

Those arms of rock do a nice job of protecting the beach and the tranquil water is the beach’s main attraction. The crystal clear cool water offer a beautiful spot for boats to drop their anchor for a few hours and many do, making the most of the natural harbour. Swimmers and divers leap from the decks into the clear waters below whilst visitors from the beach wade and float out to join them. The rocky sea bed makes this a popular spot for snorkelers and free divers to come and peer at the abundant sea life, whilst the caves set into the cliff wall attract explorers via Kayak, paddle board and dingy. Most visitors to this beach will find they spend the majority of their day in the sea which has a shallow entry gradient clearly marked swimming and boating areas and no waves to speak of, although it is very rocky everywhere and has no lifeguard so although generally safe is perhaps not the best for beginner swimmers.

On the beach at Cala Moli you’ll find more pebbles than sand and although you can find a few soft spots to lie you’ll probably want to hire a sun lounger for €10 per day or bring a lilo or chair in order to relax comfortably. You’ll also want to bring all your other beach necessities with you as there are no shops anywhere by. There is one restaurant, the luxury IT Cala Moli beach club.

IT Cala Moli is the only building of any kind here and houses the beach’s only toilets. The club is it is built sympathetically to the beach with a  beautiful white and pale turquoise colour scheme, luxury white sun beds and a bar and restaurant area sparkling with elegant glassware and mouth watering menu. If you venture up the steps and into the building you’ll find it opens immediately onto a stunning pool area complete with cabana beds, DJ and massage area and you could easily while away a whole day in pampered luxury in this VIP haven. Although the whole place screams VIP and the menu does feature some jaw-dropping seafood and champagne prices it is actually surprisingly inclusive and if you don’t mind waiting for a table in peak summer you could lunch here on pizza from €10 and beer or soft drinks for €6. Definitely book ahead if there's a crowd of you though.
