The Swiss-born Italian artist known as Robert Miles is perhaps most famous for his 1996 number one hit 'Children' - a tune that has withstood the test of time and is instantly recognisable.

Having been a resident of Ibiza for some time now Miles founded the radio station Openlab where he also hosted a regular show that broadcast across the Balearic islands of Ibiza and Formentera. The news of his death was announced on their facebook page.

"It is with a very heavy heart that we say our farewell to Roberto Concina, known as Robert Miles. Robert passed away peacefully last night after a courageous battle with stage 4 metastatic cancer over the last 9 months."

After releasing the 1990's hit trance track 'Children', which went to number one in more than 12 countries, he focused more on producing and eventually launched the Open Lab Balearic radio station.

Music artists and DJs have expressed their sadness via social media, including Pete Tong "Sad to hear Robert Miles passing r.i.p thanks for the music" and Boy George "R.I.P Robert Miles. Very sad news!".

Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
