Serral Beach Review

A little hidden beach and lounge bar looking out over San Antonio

featured in Beach reviews Author Anita Gait, Ibiza Reporter Updated

If you’re looking for a little hideaway that’s not too far from the town but feels a world away then head to Serral beach in the Sant Joseph area of the San Antonio bay.

Within walking distance along the coast from San Antonio town centre if you have 30-40 minutes to spare or hop a bus or water taxi over from the main town. Worth it especially at the quieter end of the summer when this beach will be almost deserted as people flock to the more built up beaches either side of it. Playa S’Estanyol to one side where the water taxi’s land and day cruisers depart and Reggae beach to the other, a thriving beach with bars and restaurants, slides and live music. Serral beach is definitely the calmest of the three.

Only 40m long Serral is somewhat urban looking with its concrete sand barriers and brick wall at the back, but this is made up for by the soft white sand and turquoise waters. If you enter the sea from the centre of the beach the sea bed is clear of rocks and has a shallow sandy gradient, at either side of the sand plenty of rocks border the beach making this a snorkelers playground especially over by the stone jetty from which you can see schools of fish darting about.

Choose to sunbathe on the white sand or walk along until you reach the flat stone shelves at the far end where people from the nearby apartments buildings recline on loungers. Not quite as comfortable as the sand but the company will make you feel like a local and the surrounding trees and bird song will transport you to somewhere far more rural than you actually are. You can also choose to step back from the beach and relax on the grass there or in the shade of the one trees, be sure to check out the wonderfully rustic rope and log swing hanging there.

Pedalos, sun loungers and parasols will be available to rent here in peak season but there is never a life guard service on this beach, there are no toilets or showers here either although the fully serviced Reggae beach is only a 5 minute walk around the coastal path.

One of the main draws for Serral is the badly named but atmospheric The Beach, Beach club and Lounge bar. Tucked away under the trees this bar is the only establishment to infringe upon this beach’s tranquillity and it does so sympathetically, painted Ibizan white and with sleek, modern décor it turns out signature cocktails, simple lunches, elegant dinners and mellow lounge music. As the season progresses the vibe will get livelier with DJ’s, Jazz bands and lounge singers scheduled to perform at various nights and beach parties throughout the summer. These parties will no doubt be a great experience but it might actually be better to visit this restaurant on an off night, when you can relax in the romantic and tranquil surroundings of quite little Serral beach and look out over the bay at the lights of San Antonio flickering into life.

Whenever you choose to visit you’ll find Serral beach easily enough, by walking from either of the neighbouring beaches along the coastline or by walking along the main road Carrer de Cala de Bou until you are opposite the Muy Thai restaurant or Sundown Ibiza hotel, you’ll see a large painted sign pointing you to The Beach and it’s a short walk from there. Limited parking is available at the east end of the beach and pay parking is available off the main road. On that road you’ll also find all manner of restaurants, shops and supermarkets should you need to pick up anything for your day at the beach.

Head to Serral beach in the pre and post season for a quite getaway close to the town, in mid season for a beach more mellow than it’s neighbours and always for a white sand beach with great snorkelling and your own private lounge bar.
