Playa Pinet Beach Review

Playa Pinet – life after Reggae

featured in Beach reviews Author Anita Gait, Ibiza Reporter Updated

Playa Pinet has long been one of the best beaches in San Antonio bay, a beautiful spot with white sand and clear water but stunning though it is, this beach tended to be remembered for the atmosphere rather than it’s beauty.

The Lively Reggae Bar at the far end with its colourful flags flying, reggae beach tunes pumping and Jamaican barbeques, did such a good job of stamping it’s mark upon this beach that it became known as Reggae Beach to the extent that if you asked for Playa Pinet, people did not know where you meant.

Alas - it’s all changed this year because, for reasons best known to themselves, Reggae Bar has moved locations. They’re not far away in a bigger venue on the road just behind the beach but the fact is they are off the beach, cannot be seen or heard from the beach and, as such, it is Reggae Beach no more. Their website and Facebook page state ‘until we return’ and the Reggae shack is still there awaiting them but it’s all boarded up and there’s no mention of a return date so now we all need to get over our loss and accept the Reggae-less Pinet beach for what it is; a stunning beach in its own right.

Truly a beautiful beach, Pinet is well worth a visit. One of the many beaches dotted along the San Antonio coastline it's definitely one of the nicest. A proper crescent shaped bay this beach also goes back deeper than most with soft white sand continuing back into the trees that back the beach. A road does run behind the beach, as do car parks, but not directly and the little strip of trees does wonders to make this beach feel more tropical and less urban despite the hotels which can be seen rising up in most directions.

The water here is also a high point, crystal clear and teeming with fish it’s a popular spot for snorkelers who favour the rocky sections at either end and also with fishermen who come and set up on the rocks in the evenings. If you’d rather just swim then stick to the middle of the beach where the entry is rock free and sandy. The gradient of the water here is nicely shallow too and the water is calm and protected, making it a great spot for kids to splash around. There’s a lifeguard on duty throughout the summer, no road near the beach and plenty of water sports on offer making this a great beach for kids and that’s before they notice the waterslides! Yep there are two tall rickety waterslides located on this beach that children young and old will want to throw themselves down, just be aware they keep very irregular opening hours so don’t make promises to the kids until you see if they’re open or not!

For adults there is a massage area where you can have all your cares smoothed away. A full body massage will cost you €40 or back neck and shoulders for €25.

Elsewhere on the beach you’ll find the usual arrangement of sun loungers and parasols for rent at €10 per day or if you choose instead to go to On The Rocks restaurant they offer complimentary sun loungers with a €7.50 spend per person, bargain. It’s also a nice lounge bar and worth wandering through the trees to the restaurant main where you’ll find a cool patio area complete with DJ booth, barbeque grill and a relaxed friendly atmosphere. It’s a great spot for sunset cocktails and grilled meat and seafood.

Further along the beach there are two brightly coloured beach huts decked out with straw roofs and parasols, they play their beach-vibe music and give the beach a little taste of the atmosphere it would have had in previous seasons. They serve food and drinks at reasonable beach prices, sandwiches, hot dogs and burgers for around €4-7 as well as pizza, pasta, paella, meat and fish dishes with nothing over €25 although some of the fish dishes are priced daily.

If you’d rather go self-catering you’ll find plenty of grocery shops on the road behind the beach as well as shops selling all the beach necessities, inflatable’s, sun cream, ice lollies etc.

Visit Playa Pinet for a chilled day on a beautiful white sand beach with lovely clear water, great for families, kids and snorkelers. Give it a miss if you’re expecting the Reggae Beach atmosphere of old.
