Playa Es Pouet Beach Review

A town centre beach with whiter sand & a little more charm

featured in Beach reviews Author Anita Gait, Ibiza Reporter Updated

Playa es Pouet is easy walking distance from the centre of San Antonio and yet infinitely more appealing than its larger neighbour the main beach S’Arenal de San Antonio.

You can access Es Pouet beach by walking along the towns promenade all the way along the main beach and around the little headland of Es Moli, it’s a flat easy stroll that will take you maybe 20 minutes and watching the bars, playgrounds and activities occurring all along the main beach will keep you occupied during your walk.

Once you round the headland you’ll see why it’s worth making the walk to little Playa es Pouet. For a start the sand here is much softer and whiter and has real depth to it so that your feet actually sink in. The sea is cleaner and less crowded and the view from the beach looks out towards open sea rather than back onto the town or into the marina. A little railing fence surrounds the beach somewhat shielding it from passers by on the road but leaving beach-goers access to the shops and restaurants situated there.

All of the amenities that you will need are available on this beach including sun loungers and parasols at a rate of €7 each from 9am – 6pm. There is a lifeguard station manned 11am – 7pm June to September as well as showers, toilets, ramp access to the beach and clearly marked areas for swimmers and boats.

Entrance to the sea here is via sandy seabed with a shallow gradient all the way out. Occasional seaweed beds clog the sea further out and mounds of it do wash up on shore to line the waters edge, there’s not enough of it to be a problem however and weed free areas to swim are easy to find, the area of the beach closest to town is bordered by rocks which make for some good snorkelling and mini rock pools to explore.

Water sports company Ski Santi, have a station on this beach and they will drag you behind their boats on the obstacle of your choosing; water-skis, wakeboard, inflatable banana, sofa or ring at not too extortionate prices, around €15 for the inflatable fun, €30-35 for ski/wakeboard lessons and they also rent jet skis and kayaks.

At one end of the beach is Es Pueto, a small restaurant with a good sized sun terrace and with a range of sun loungers vastly superior to the beach’s rental ones, these are naturally reserved for customers only. The menu here is cheap and Brit friendly with kids meals, burgers, jacket potatoes and sandwiches costing you €4, main meals, meat and seafood dishes anywhere from €4 - €14 . You can also get a cocktail here for €5 which is the cheapest you’ll find especially when sitting right on the beach.

If you fancy something a little classier, head over the road to Aperture restaurant where the cocktails cost more but you can enjoy them on their roof terrace with a great sunset view. If you fancy something far less classy head next door to The Lizard Bar where if you spend over €1001 at the bar your strippers are free!

Ignoring that part, it is worth checking them out in the daytime purely for their mouth-watering ice cream cocktails; the Strawberry Shortcake consists of fresh strawberries, strawberry schnapps, Amaretto and strawberry ice cream, perfect after a hot day on the beach. Along this road you’ll also find various other eateries as well as supermarkets, tobacconists and souvenir shops.

Playa es Pouet is a good beach for any one who wants to remain near the conveniences of the town but wants a nicer beach and view than the main one in town. There’s enough going on here to keep kids amused and there’s also a playground situated just back around the headland. The fact that this beach does lead out onto a fairly busy road may worry parents with small kids, and they should also note that if they go beyond the Es Pueto restaurant they will find them selves on a separate beach which does not provide a lifeguard service.

This beach is not large and will get busy during peak season, however if you don’t have all day or you need to stay close to town its your best option, pretty, easily accessible and with all the necessities Playa des Pouet is a town centre winner!
