The much-opposed eco tax is rapidly taking shape, and will be in place next year before the summer season starts. The Balearic Government has disclosed new details on how it will work, and what sort of projects it will be spent on.

A committee of experts comprised of representatives of the tourist industry, as well as environmental groups and members of the government and trade unions will decide the sort of measures to be taken with the money collected by the eco tax.

There are six main fields on which this new tax will be spent: the improvement of the quality and competitiveness of the tourist sector, especially in regard to its promotion during off-season; the construction of new infrastructures for sustainable tourism; the protection and preservation of the environment; the conservation and restoration of historical and cultural heritage; research and technological innovation: finally, better employment opportunities in the tourist sector.

Hotel managers have publicly voiced their opposition to the tax, saying that it will not have a real impact on the industry.
