The Balearic Islands Meteorology Agency (AEMET) reported that the recent rainfall recorded is almost double the usual amount for the month of August. In Ibiza a total of 36 litres per square metre has been recorded so far in August, compared to the usual 19.

Yesterday the rain in Ibiza Town caused all sorts of disorder and chaos. The rain gauge at the airport recorded 32.8 liters / m2 of rainfall between 19:00 and 21:00, last night. I think we can call that torrential!?

The residents of the town are well used to storms such as this and the issues that follow, which include flooded streets, overflowing sewers and traffic jams in the major avenues.

A burst pipe near plaza de sa Tertúlia had volunteers working to bail water from premises that were flooded, including several restaurants. Within a few hours local firefighters had already received around 20 call-outs. One of the hardest hit areas was the town of Jesus, which was completely overwhelmed by the large amounts of water accumulating.

The tunnels of the road linking the airport to Ibiza Town also suffered the consequences of the storm, and in fact several drivers were trapped and had to leave their cars and wade out through the water.

Although there are a few clouds remaining at certain places across the island, the sunshine today should dry up any water left over!
