New Plan to Eliminate Illegal Taxi Services in Ibiza
The local council has created a series of measures to remove illegal taxis
A commission, dependent on the island's local government, has been created to control the so-called 'pirate taxis'. Their main objective is to improve the collaboration between police and taxi drivers, as well as to speed up penalties.
Illegal taxis thrive during the summer season in Ibiza. Only last year, there were around 200 travelling around the island. The phenomenon began a few years ago and has recently boomed, even though harsher measures have been set up by the authorities.
Many of them arrive in Ibiza when the summer starts, usually renting a car with fraudulent means such as with credit cards that they immediately cancel. They then wait at the airport for those low-cost passengers eager to save some money, or at the busy nightlife areas for tourists who want to go back to their hotels.
A plan is being drafted to eliminate this issue, with an increase in the number of policemen involved, and fines which can now reach up to 6,000€.
