Formentera is in the midst of a green revolution. The island's authorities have unveiled a plan to progressively swap the 15,000 cars and motorbikes that circulate on its roads for electric versions, a project that will start in 2017.

So far, the government has invested 100,000 euros to set up electric charging docks, currently 14 are available. Other actions include restricting the 132 kilometres of green routes that connect the island to electric vehicles, and placing a limit on the amount of polluting cars that enter Formentera.

The authorities have also signed an agreement with Citroën. The French company has donated six of their e-Mehari electric cars to the island, and they will offer their product at discount prices to local hotels, so that they can rent them out to guests. So far, 200 hotels have already voiced their interest.
