Ibiza goes to Hollywood
A film by a local screenwriter, on the run for the Oscars
'Campeones' has been a huge success, becoming the highest grossing movie of 2018 in Spain. The film has now been chosen to represent the country at the 91st edition of the Academy Awards.
Written by David Marqués, an Ibiza local, 'Campeones' ('Champions') tells the story of a basketball team comprised of people with disabilities and their new coach. Marqués started writing the screenplay six years before the movie was released, and it was directed by popular Spanish filmmaker Javier Fesser.
Having premiered in April this year, the film quickly became a box office success drawing more than 3.6 million viewers to the cinema. It has now been selected as the Spanish entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at next year's Academy Awards. The Oscar nominees will be announced on Tuesday 22nd of January 2019. Best of luck, 'Campeones'!
