Ibiza has the perfect cure to remedy all post-Christmas blues.

With glorious sunshine and balmy temperatures, where else could be better to kick start the year than on the beautiful island of Ibiza. Here, the festivities are still in full swing, with a great variety of things to keep you in high spirits and inspire your resolutions for the new year.

One of Spain's main Christmas festivities, the legendary 'Three Kings Parade', kicks off the month of celebrations, followed by some of the biggest local fiestas of the year including the Flower Power festival in San Antonio, and a number of other Festes that take place to celebrate Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals.

What's the weather like in Ibiza in January?

The weather in Ibiza remains warm throughout the year with temperatures from between 8-15ºC in the winter months. This makes Ibiza a great winter destination where you can appreciate more mild climates, and enjoy outdoor activities and exploring the Ibizan countryside.

Al Freso dining in the day time is definitely possible with a light jumper, but with average night-time lows dropping to around 11ºC in January, do make sure you bring some layers, too. The island gets around 40mm of rain in January, and on average 1/3 of January days get some rain, but this comes in light showers which usually pass quickly. If you fancy braving a dip in the sea, the Mediterranean waters are a brisk 15°C at this time of year.

What's on in Ibiza in January?

Three Kings Day:

For those looking to continue the Christmas festivities, the Three Kings Day celebrations take place on January 6th. To end the twelve days of Christmas, on the eve of the Epiphany on January 6th, various towns and villages across the island host the annual ‘Three Kings Parade’ as a tribute to the three wise men who brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. With colourful parades filling the streets of most towns in Ibiza the night before, on January 5th, the main one happening in the capital. Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar will be the stars of these parades, delivering sweets and presents to all the kids there to watch.

Fiestes de Sant Antoni:

The 17 January is the patron saint day for Saint Anthony, the saint of animals, and you'll be able to take part in the Festival of Sant Antoni, which takes place throughout Ibiza. Celebrations run from January into February, and include the blessing of pets for this patron saint of animals.

Flower Power:

As part of the Fiestes de Sant Antoni, one of the most noteworthy events in January takes place - the annual Flower Power celebrations sees the streets of San Antonio transformed into a bustling hub of colour and activity. Taking place over one weekend every year during January, Ibiza’s most iconic party reinvents it's "west end" party strip into an authentic hippy vibe. With live music, food stalls and plenty of great entertainment, the event is sure to bring nothing but peace and love to the island. Be prepared to dress up in your best 60’s and 70’s gear, platform shoes are optional.

Culture & Folk Festival:

The Festival de Balls, Música i Cançó Popular de la Nostra Terra is another part of the program of the festivities of the patron saint of the town of Sant Antoni. This event celebrates Spanish and Ibizan culture with music, costumes and folk dances performed by the famous colles (troupes) of the municipality. The event has been hosted for decades at the Regio cinema in Sant Antoni. It is always held in January as part of the town festivities dedicated to this popular saint.

City Breaks in January

Visiting the town of Sant Antonio in West Ibiza is an excellent choice for January, due to it's many fiestas and fun activities. This popular town has plenty of culture and history to explore, but is also one of the favourite island locations for party lovers, with some of the "west end"'s infamous bars staying open during the winter months. It's beautiful beach, located right in front of the town, is wonderfully quiet in January, too. In short - it's got something for everyone!

Cinemas in January

If you're caught in Ibiza on one of those 1 in 3 rainy days in January, what else to do but a film and dinner or drinks. As a couple or with the whole family, this one's a classic. The main cinema complex on the island is located in Ibiza Town and it usually shows the latest releases in English with Spanish subtitles. Afterwards, go for tapas and a relaxed drink at one of the local bars - try S'Escalinata Bar on the traditional old streets of Dalt Vila. They have some great snacking options at all times of day and a fun, bohemian atmosphere, with an array of stools and bean bags for lounging. There is also a small cinema screen in San Antonio regularly showing films in English.

Ibiza is known for it's love of the Arts and if you're lucky their event IbizaCineFest will be taking place during your visit. Adding a dash of Hollywood glamour to the island, the festival showcases some of the best independent films and documentaries. Hosted in Ibiza Town, the event runs usually in January or February.

Shopping in January

Ibiza is known for its style and there are plenty of excellent shopping spots and markets to explore in January. In Ibiza Town boutiques are peppered on every corner and you'll find tons of charming stores selling handmade jewellery, perfumes and clothes. In addition, you'll find the classic host of high street stores such as Bershka and Zara, as well as shoe shops and jewellery makers. Meanwhile, the quaint town of Santa Gertrudis is one of the top spots to go for colourful, quirky home furnishings. Similarly, San Carlos has a host of beautiful boutiques and shops to explore. These are the spots to find some special and unique treasures.

Museums in January

With the weather still cooler and wetter than any other time of year, it’s the ideal month for indoor activities, and what better time to visit some of Ibiza’s galleries and museums.

For those interested in the island's history you can visit the Archaeological Museum which showcases artefacts from the Neolithic age to the Islamic era, or the Madina Yabisa Interpretation Centre where you can experience how Dalt Vila looked under the Muslim rule in the Middle Ages. Ibiza Town also hosts the Museum of Contemporary Art, which has a wonderful collection of paintings and engravings dating from the 1960s to our days. Once you're done exploring the culture and history, be sure to visit Ibiza's excellent selection of excellent cafes and restaurants located nearby in the old town.
