For most people Spring time is when we decided to clear out the old stuff, dump the rubbish and start afresh...but after a busy summer season and plenty of tourists on the Island, this is the time of year to 'Clean up the Med' on Ibiza.

On Saturday morning in San Antonio a team of dedicated volunteers began cleaning the seabed in the Bay and collected an astonishing total of two tons of rubbish from the bottom of the sea! Around 30 people, including divers and local residents spent the morning collecting all kinds of things from the seabed such as cables, ropes, metal bars and even a plastic chair.

The event took place thanks to the partnership between the Yacht Club and Active Dive which enabled the operation to take place with a boat and appropriate dive gear and equipment. The event was organised by the Department for the Environment in the City of San Antonio, which also has the support of other groups and organisations across the region. The hope is that events such as this will educate people on the importance of caring for the sea and the seabed so that it does not becomes a rubbish tip!
