Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera Festival

Celebrating the town's patron saint, Santa Gertrudis

featured in Events calendar Updated

Every year, on the day of their saint, each village and town in Ibiza hosts a celebration in which tradition, culture, and sports are always present. The party continues for a couple of weeks.

The village will honour its patron saint, Santa Gertrudis, annually on November 16th. But, of course, in true Ibiza style, the festival celebrations will stretch out over several weeks in the run-up to the event itself.

The programme includes sports competitions, chess and ludo championships, animation shows, live music and DJs, together with plenty of communal feasting and drinking. Click on the website link to see it.

History

Gertrude was born on the feast of the Epiphany, January 6, 1256, in Eisleben, Thuringia. Although she died around 1302, the exact date of her death is unknown. At the age of twenty-five, she experienced the first of a series of visions that continued throughout her life, and which in fact changed the course of her life. She practised a type spirituality called "nuptial mysticism," where she came to see herself as the bride of Christ. Gertrude produced numerous writings, though only some survive today.

She was never formally canonised, and it wasn’t until 1606 that she was honoured by Rome and a feast day (the day of her death) allocated to her.
